Before you buy the ticket, you need to know two things: whether your dog can travel in the cabin or has to go in the hold, and what paperwork Chile's SAG requires to leave the country. Here's what Chile's three airlines publish today and the SAG process, explained simply.
Cabin or hold?
Only small dogs travel in the cabin, inside a bag or carrier under the seat. On SKY and JetSMART the limit is 10 kg for the dog and its bag together. If your dog is bigger, the alternative is the hold, which among these three airlines only LATAM and SKY offer.
Watch out for short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds: LATAM doesn't accept them in the hold.
Each airline's rules
| Rule | LATAM | SKY | JetSMART |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabin | Yes: hard carrier up to 36 × 33 × 19 cm or soft bag up to 40 × 28 × 25 cm | Yes: up to 10 kg with a soft bag | Yes: up to 10 kg with a 38 × 35 × 22 cm soft bag |
| Hold | Yes: up to 32 or 45 kg with the kennel, by aircraft and route | Yes (check conditions on its website) | No (its conditions cover the cabin) |
| Minimum age | 16 weeks (6 months to or from the US) | Check its website | 3 months |
| When to request | When booking or up to 48 h before (cabin: up to 4 h before) | Up to 48 h before the flight | Ask the Contact Center for space at least 48 h before |
| Other conditions | Flights operated only by LATAM; no brachycephalic breeds in the hold | Dogs and cats only | Direct flights only; 1 pet per adult and up to 4 per flight |
Checked on October 19, 2026 on each airline's official website. Rules and fees change: confirm them before you buy.
If your dog is big: LATAM's hold
- Single-aisle aircraft (A319, A320, A321): up to 32 kg with the kennel on flights of up to 4 hours, and up to 23 kg on flights of 4 to 5 hours.
- Twin-aisle aircraft (B767, B777, B787): up to 45 kg, or 32 kg on flights to, from or via Europe, Argentina or Venezuela.
- Kennel up to 300 linear cm (length + width + height) and 115 cm high, with at least 5 cm between the dog's head and the roof.
- Subject to LATAM's confirmation and space on the aircraft.
The SAG certificate to leave Chile
To travel abroad your dog needs the Export Animal Health Certificate (Certificado Zoosanitario de Exportación, CZE), issued by the SAG. To request it you need:
- Your dog registered in Chile's National Pet Registry (Registro Nacional de Mascotas).
- A health certificate from a veterinarian, no more than 10 days old.
- To meet the destination country's requirements: some ask for tests or vaccines months in advance.
You can request it online on the SAG website or at a SAG office, but not at the border. ChileAtiende recommends applying about 10 days before you travel: processing takes 3 working days.
